about

Orpheus, who was madly in love with his wife and nymph Eurydice, did not accept the fact that she had been killed by the bite of a snake, while trying to escape from the insistent attention of Aristeo. Despite many obstacles, Orpheus decided to reach the Underworld and ask Hades and Persephone to have his beloved back in the world of the living. The pact, however, provided that Orpheus couldn’t turn around and look at his beloved during the journey that took them from the world of the dead to the world of the living; a single look would separate them forever. During that long journey Eurydice, not being aware of that pact, continued to call the attention of her beloved with melancholic phrases and laments. Despite the sadness and pain felt, Orpheus managed to cross the door of the underworld and, believing to be out, he turned to his beloved who, however, was left behind; a sharp pain hit her in the ankle where the snake had bitten her and Eurydice quickly disappeared forever. Virgil tells us that Orpheus wandered for seven months singing sad melodies with his voice and his lyre, and was eventually killed by the women of Ciconi who did not accept the fidelity of the man towards his beloved: his head was thrown into the river Ebro and it is said to be still wandering dedicating melancholy songs to his beloved.
